The original main event was the head to head of UFC Light Heavyweight champ Vitor Belfort and UFC Middleweight champ Anderson Silva. But in the middle of training, Ed Soares, Silva's manager released a statement that Silve could not go through with the fight as he was still healing from an elbow injury. Another supposed match is between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin for the UFC Heavyweight Championship. This was slated on UFC 106 but was moved to UFC 108. this fight would need to be re-scheduled yet again because of Lesnar's continuing sickness.
The supposed winner between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueria would compete against the winner between Carwin and Lesnar. But this match has been removed from the list because of Nogueria's staph infection.
The Nogueira and Velasquez fight has been rescheduled for February 21, 2010 at UFC 110.
Changes have been made for the Tyson Griffin and Jim Miller bout as well. Griffin backed out due to an injury. Sean Sherk was supposed to replace him but he pulled out also. Duane Ludwig takes Sherk's position and will compete against Jim Miller.
